How to pick corks
When deciding what to close your container with, there are many choices. If you have a screw top bottle, that's obvious...use the top it comes with.
However, if you have not top, corks provide the best choice. Cork is a natural product of the cork oak tree. The bark is quite thick, is peeled off, and corks are stamped out. The bark then re-grows on the tree!
If you are planning to store long term, then a cork is a good choice. Synthetic corks are also available. Choose a straight cork that is slightly bigger than the neck of your bottle and allow a wee bit of space between the liquid and the cork. Number 8 or 9 corks work well in most wine bottles. You may need a corker to get them in properly.
If you are planning to give your bottle to a friend who will drink it soon, then you can use a cork cap which simply fits in the top of the bottle and is easily removed.
Wine should be refrigerated after opening, however, liquor such as rum or whiskey does not.
