Often known as Demerera sugar, many brown sugars are made from white sugar with the addition of molasses, while more authentically, others are a product of making molasses from sugar cane.
Because of this, brown sugar is often used in the production of rum along with molasses. See the section on rum or molasses for how to make rum using brown sugar and molasses.
Generally speaking, dark sugar will be more flavorful than light, since there is a higher molasses content.
